RAKTA Launches Real-Time Passenger Information (RTPI) System to Enhance Smart Mobility Across Public Transport Stations

In a new step reflecting its commitment to enhancing public transport services and deploying smart solutions across stations, Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority (RAKTA) has announced the launch of its Real-Time Passenger Information (RTPI) system, powered by solar energy, with operations commencing at Al Manar Mall bus station as the first phase of a wider rollout across the emirate.

The first phase of the project has commenced at Al Manar Mall Station, marking the installation and activation of the first smart display. The project will be gradually expanded to cover all public transport stations across the emirate, enabling customers to access real-time trip data and bus arrival times instantly. This initiative is expected to facilitate smoother mobility and significantly enhance the overall public transport user experience.

The project aligns with RAKTA’s strategic direction to develop smart transport infrastructure and adopt innovative solutions in line with global best practices, supporting the objectives of the Government of Ras Al Khaimah and the Emirate’s Vision 2030 to build a more efficient, sustainable, and resilient transport ecosystem.

A Smarter and More Seamless Customer Experience

The RTPI system utilizes advanced E-Ink (electronic ink) technology to display real-time bus information, including actual arrival times, route details, and live operational updates. The high-contrast display ensures clear visibility even under direct sunlight and in various weather conditions.

This system empowers customers with up-to-the-minute travel information, enabling better journey planning and reducing waiting times, ultimately improving service efficiency and elevating the experience of public transport users across the emirate.

Smart Infrastructure Supporting Sustainability and Efficiency

H.E. Eng. Esmaeel Hasan Al Blooshi, Director General of RAKTA, stated that the launch of the RTPI system represents a significant milestone in RAKTA’s ongoing efforts to enhance public transport services and improve customer experience through the provision of accurate, real-time, and easily accessible information.

He highlighted that the system is built on sustainable technologies, operating fully on solar power without the need for external electricity sources. It is supported by internal batteries that ensure continuous operation around the clock under various conditions, reflecting RAKTA’s commitment to developing smart and environmentally friendly infrastructure.

He further noted that the technology offers low maintenance requirements and a long operational lifespan, while seamlessly integrating with RAKTA’s existing information platform without the need for additional infrastructure or ongoing connectivity and energy costs. This contributes to improved operational efficiency and long-term service sustainability.

Operational Savings Enhancing Cost Efficiency

RAKTA confirmed that technical and financial studies conducted for the project indicate that the RTPI system achieves cost savings of up to 81.7% in total cost of ownership and operation over a five-year period compared to conventional display screens. These savings are attributed to the system’s reliance on solar energy and its low operational and maintenance requirements.

This approach reflects RAKTA’s commitment to balancing service innovation with cost efficiency and environmental sustainability, while enabling the reallocation of resources towards further customer-focused projects and services.

Phased Expansion Across the Bus Network

The project will be implemented in phases, starting with Al Manar Mall Station, followed by a gradual rollout across public transport stations throughout the emirate. This will ensure wider access to real-time information for a larger segment of bus users.

The initiative forms part of RAKTA’s broader program to develop smart public transport infrastructure, which includes smart bus systems, real-time passenger information platforms, and integrated journey planning services. These efforts collectively aim to deliver a more seamless, efficient, and sustainable mobility experience for residents and visitors of Ras Al Khaimah.
